Famed for its seaside location, ‘Bangor by the Sea’ has a lot to offer. Some of the best walks are located on the North Down coastal path, coupled with local history on your doorstep.  Explore locations like Bangor Castle and Bangor Abbey, not forgetting fun activities enjoyed by everyone young and old at Pickie Fun Park.

Only half an hour’s drive or train ride away is Belfast City Centre, considered to be one of the world’s best small cities with lots to offer. One of Europe’s top Tourist Attractions, The Titanic Museum is only a 20 minutes away. Further afield, but within easy travelling distance is the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Giant’s Causeway  In addition various film locations surround Bangor and are utilised as a part of TV series like Game of Thrones and Line of Duty.

Golf

It’s no secret that Ireland is a haven for golf, with over 30 courses in County Down alone. The birthplace of stars like major champions Rory McIlroy, Darren Clark & Graeme McDowell.

There are no fewer than 7 golf courses within 15 minutes of Shelleven Guest House. Courses include, Royal Belfast Golf Club – the oldest golf club in Ireland – and Holywood Golf Club, the home of 2014 Open & PGA Championship winner, Rory McIlroy.  It’s easy to see where they found their passion for the game!

A golfer herself, Sue Toner will be happy to assist you in organising your golf during your stay. Whether it’s arranging tee off times or hiring golf clubs, Sue is on hand.  We will also be happy to arrange discounted green fees and free club hire at Bangor Golf Club.

Shelleven Guest House is ideally positioned to explore North Down and the wider County Down area on foot.

The North Down coastal path is a 16 mile linear route following the rugged North Down coast from Orlock Point in Donaghadee to Holywood. Bangor Is perfectly located to join the route.

For those wanting more of a challenge, the spectacular Mourne Mountains are located a short 40 minute drive south. Here you can sample peaceful forest parks, windswept beaches and sand dunes or climb Northern Ireland’s tallest mountain – Slieve Donard.

Local attractions in Bangor include Northdown Museum, Ward Park, Bangor Abbey and Bangor Castle which have beautiful grounds and a stunning Walled Garden.

Bangor offers a good choice of lovely coastal walks, coupled with a variety of children’s entertainment at the Pickie Fun Park.  More noteworthy, is the super leisure complex, The Aurora, which has a wide choice of facilities for adults and children.

Dining Out

A car is not needed around Bangor town, it is a mere stroll away from numerous eateries.  Specifically, quality coffee shops, takeaways, traditional pubs and award winning restaurants have something to offer everyone.

There are quality restaurants serving a selection of local produce including fish, vegetables and home baked cakes.  Some are ideally positioned on the Marina or opposite Belfast Lough; The Nines, Underground Dining and Jamaica Inn will not disappoint.

Nightlife

There are lots of places to chill out and relax around Bangor Marina, enjoy a pint of Guinness or something stronger.  Visit Betty Blacks offering cocktails and late night drinking in the high street.  Similarly, don’t miss more traditional irish pubs offering live music. Be sure to visit Fealtys for local bands and the Hop House, Jenny Watts and Wolseys for more feel good music.

Alternatively, only a short ride away are the bustling bars of Belfast.  You can pull up a stool by the open fires and enjoy the Irish Folk music from traditional musicians. Every night of the week, you can experience the fiddlers, pipes and the bodhráns; the craic is guaranteed.
